Bernice Allen Whittington

Obituary for Bernice Allen Whittington Conway...Bernice Allen Whittington, 90, passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at Kingston Nursing Center. Mrs. Whittington was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Jehu Ben and Thelma Booth Allen. She was a charter member of the Conway Medical Center Auxiliary and served over 22 years as a volunteer, amassing over 4000 hours of service and received the Palmetto Award for her efforts on behalf of the Auxiliary. She served as Treasurer of the Auxiliary from 1983-1999. At her death Mrs. Whittington was a trustee emeritus of the Conway Medical Center Foundation. She and her husband established an endowment in 1996 to promote the health and well-being of children in Horry County. Mrs. Whittington was also an active member of First Baptist Church of Conway, having served in many capacities through the years. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers at Kingston Nursing Center and Mercy Hospice for their love and devotion to her during the past few years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanwood Floyd and a brother, Francis Allen. Surviving are her husband, Jeff C. Whittington of Conway; a daughter, Ann W. Caughman (Denley) of Marion; two grandchildren, Anna McDowell (Kipp) of Conway and Charles Caughman (Ellen) of Myrtle Beach; four great-grandchildren, Isaac McDowell, Charlie Caughman, Daniel Caughman and Seth McDowell; a sister, Geneva Jones of Lydia, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 PM Saturday at the residence of Anna McDowell, 203 Park Avenue, Conway, SC 29526 and following the funeral service at Hillcrest Mausoleum. Funeral services will be held 4:30 PM Sunday at Hillcrest Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Aubrey Floyd officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum.
