Edmund A Sayer

Edmund Alfred Sayer, 92, passed away December 15, 2023, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. His wife of 39 years, Ann L. Sayer, was at his side. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Ed was the son of Edmund Augustus Sayer and A. Ruth (Baun) Sayer, and the brother of Barbara Ann (Sayer) Smith. Ed was known for his dedication to family, his penchant for meteorology and maps, his expertise at following the stock market, and his delight in spending time outdoors—from the mountains to the sea. He traveled across the U.S. numerous times—by train, car, and RV—camping and hiking in national parks, and visiting friends and relatives along the way. As a boy, he spent time at the family summer home on Governors Island, East Beach Quonochontaug in Rhode Island. As an adult, he enjoyed sailing and swimming in the ocean, walking the beach, and bicycling—whether in Rhode Island, New Jersey, or Florida. Ed was a 1949 graduate of Classical High School in Providence. In 1953, he earned his B.A. in Economics from Cornell University, which is where he met his first wife, Shirley Ann Howard, of Kingston, RI. From 1953-1955, Ed served his country as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, then as a weather officer at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah. After Ed returned from the service, he entered the new field of Electronic Data Processing and held various technical and supervisory positions at corporations in the NY/NJ/CT Tri-State area, including Travelers Insurance, ITT, Home Insurance, Bunker Ramo, Monchik-Weber, and S&P Global (McGraw-Hill/Standard & Poor’s). Ed played a key role in the evolution of online stock market data processing, culminating in the development of Monchik-Weber's Ticker III. Ed and Shirley lived in Hartford, Bolton, Stamford, and Darien, CT, and then moved to Oakland, NJ, where Ed was a deacon and elder at Pond's Reformed Church. They enjoyed summer vacations with their children at their beach house in Matunuck, RI, until Shirley passed away from cancer in 1978. In 1984, Ed married Ann Leontine (Winquist) Poneleit, of Forked River, NJ, and six years later they moved to Barnegat, NJ, where he began his retirement. Subsequently, they moved to Forked River, NJ. In 2021, they relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC, which had been a frequent stopping point on their motorhome snowbird trips from New Jersey to Juno Beach, Florida, where they spent the winters. Ed was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Ann Sayer; his parents, Edmund and Ruth Sayer; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Emory Smith; niece, Janet Smith; stepdaughter, Linda Danner; and stepson, Alan Poneleit. He is survived by his children and stepchildren, Steven and Jeri Sayer; Beverly and Paul Truebig; Marie and Steven Taylor; Marcia Davis and Bill Holm; James Sayer; Sandra Poneleit; Elise and Michael Zebrowski; 21 grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 21 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Carolina Forest Chapel, 325 Hinson Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC. Following the service, Ed will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC. A celebration of life will also be held on December 30 at 11:00 a.m., at Ponds Reformed Church in Oakland, NJ.
