Gloria McDonald Stubbs

Gloria McDonald Stubbs passed away peacefully on June 13, 2020 with her husband, Bill, and family at her side. She now lives with her heavenly Father and her Lord and Savior, Jesus. · Born December 12, 1945, the daughter of Walter Hansel McDonald and Mary Johnson McDonald, Gloria graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School. In high school, as a GA (Girls in Action - a Woman's Missionary Union's organization for girls), Gloria attained the highest level of Queen Regent in Service. Gloria graduated from Meredith College as a Meredith Angel with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and in Elementary Education. While a student, Gloria met and married the love of her life, William "Bill" Stubbs, in 1966. She spent most of her career as a 5th grade teacher at Buena Vista Elementary School in Greenville County, SC. She was a master teacher who loved teaching and excelled at engaging her students and challenging them to give their very best in the classroom. She had a strong passion for teaching creative writing and American History and her goal was to create enthusiastic, American patriots in her students. Gloria and Bill retired to Myrtle Beach in 1999 where Gloria spent as much time as possible watching the tide roll in, soaking up the sun, and reading under her umbrella. During her time away from the beach, she enjoyed being a member of Ocean View Baptist Church. Gloria sang in the choir, volunteered in the library, and led the Wendy Clay Women on Mission group. Gloria and Bill shared a love for missions and enjoyed leading mission teams to Lynch, Kentucky, every fall for 7 years. They led mission volunteers to serve in food and clothing ministries, children's and nursing home ministries, and in construction projects throughout the Lynch area. Gloria took great joy being the hands and feet of Jesus, hugging each person she met, and praying for them to know her Jesus. She never failed to pray daily for the missionaries on the prayer calendar. She was a prayer warrior for every person who had a need. The arrival of each of her 6 grandchildren in her two sons' families brought a new kind of love into Gloria and Bill's lives. Just as she had loved and nurtured her sons, she now poured out love on her grandchildren. Gloria and Bill cherished their roles as "Mimi" and "Papa". They enjoyed days on the beach, playing card games, reading books, sharing big hugs, and lots of laughs and love with each of the grandchildren. Gloria will be lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend {Bill) of 53 years, her two sons (Monty and Mel), her "daughters-in-love" (Shana and Kimberly), grandchildren (Carley, Alexander, Angelina, Kaitlin, Lola, and Liam), as well as cousins (Judy Johnson Reid, Carol Ann Johnson Brown, W. H. Johnson III, Joseph Leonard Johnson, Needham Edger Johnson, Sue Johnson Armstrong, Emmitt Hickerson Johnson, and Wayne McDonald). A Family Celebration of Gloria’s life will be held at McMillan-Small Funeral Home at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00-7:30 PM at the funeral home.
