Helen Laney Gainey

Helen Laney Gainey, age 99, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, August 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience. Born in Orville, Ohio, Helen graduated from Hartsville High School in 1941. She began her professional journey working for Sonoco Products Company in Hartsville, SC before dedicating most of her career to the medical field in Conway, SC, serving both at Conway Hospital and alongside Dr. Robert Cathcart Smith. Helen was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Conway, where she was dedicated member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She lived on the corner of 13th Avenue and Collins Street in Conway for over 50 years, becoming a beloved fixture in the neighborhood. Helen found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for them was evident in every moment they shared, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Helen is predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Clyde White Gainey; her cherished daughter, Barbara Gainey McNair; her son-in-law, James Eugene McNair. She is also predeceased by her brother, Roy E. Laney and sisters, Eileen Lewis and Virginia Walters. She is survived by her grandson, Stephen James McNair (Jennifer) of Lexington, SC, her granddaughter, Susan McNair Seckinger (Billy) of Beaufort, SC, and six great-grandchildren, Austin, Alex, and Aidan McNair, all of Lexington, SC, and Hailey, Ellie and Garrett Seckinger, all of Beaufort, SC. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marian Adams (Bill), of Kingsport, TN. In addition, she leaves behind many nieces, nephews and other family members in the Conway and Hartsville areas and beyond. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC on Monday, September 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends and family following the service. Pallbearers for Helen's service are, Austin McNair, Alex McNair, Aidan McNair, Garrett Seckinger, Jeremy Vaught and Chris Felkel. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Markelle Baskerville, Audrionna Bessent, Anastasia Bush George, NP Christina Pappalardo and Joyce Pope for their special love and care during Helen's final years. In lieu of flowers, the Family requests memorials in Helen's Honor to be sent to First Baptist Church of Conway, 603 Elm Street, Conway, SC 29526. Helen's memory will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind, as she will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family, church and community.
